The image conveys gradations along a scale. I feel like us Americans spend an inordinate time hearing/thinking/worrying about the extreme ends of most scales. There's a lot of room in between, and I think if you spend even a little time with most people, you'll find that not many (or any) of us exist always in one place along any continuum. We tend to think of ourselves as fluid, dynamic, complicated, interesting beings but often fail to think of or see the same in others.
